8 IT recruitment trends that will change the game in 2017

The digital economy is expanding at an extraordinary pace. With the dependency on technology in business increasing, digital transformation is taking a central place in corporate agendas. Read on to find out the IT recruitment trends which will emerge as game-changers in the year ahead.

1. IT hiring showing positive signs following the Brexit vote

The UK Tech Industry is Defying Post-Brexit Gloom. There has been a dramatic improvement in tech sector’s confidence despite the Brexit-related uncertainty. IT hiring is showing brighter signs with 78% of 1100 tech professionals surveyed by technology career site Dice being positive about their career aspirations. The annual Job Market Report by Dice also shows that 59% of contractors and 62% of permanent staff are expecting their salary to rise in this year.  

2. IT labour market is still very hot

Demand for IT jobs is expected to rise in 2017. A recent survey from specialist recruiter Robert Walters and leading British job board Jobsite has found that 47% of managers of the 700 senior technology professionals surveyed expect demand for IT specialists to be higher in 2017 than it was in 2016. Research by global IT industry body CompTIA showed that UK IT staff job postings have increased 10 percent year-on-year at 1.3 million IT job postings.

3. Salaries are on a rise

Salaries are increasing at a rate reflective of the skills deficit in the market. According to the annual Job Market Report by Dice, half of the technology professionals earn over £40,000 a year, one percent higher than 2015. While majority of permanent IT staff earn between £20,000 to £40,000, IT contractors’ pay decreased by 21% over the past year.

4. Cyber security skill continues to be a most sought-after skill

Senior IT professionals are anticipating cyber security professionals to see the highest growth in demand for their skills. 54% of employers are planning to hire specialists in this area.

5. IT security skills demand continues to surge

IT security has steadily risen and continues to be at the forefront of the hiring priorities. The Tech Cities Job Watch Q4 report shows that the demand for IT security skills continued to surge at 46% due to a rise in Internet of Things (IoT) and the upcoming EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) reform.

6. Developers continue to be leading players

The Robert Half 2017 Salary Guide showed Developer salaries have been steadily rising from £26,750 - £45,500 in 2016 to £27,500 - £48,000 in 2017; 4.5% year-on-year rise.

7. Product managers and data scientist are seeing the best growth

The Tech Cities Job Watch Q4 report shows Big Data roles attract higher salaries with an average of £68,799 across ten key cities of the UK, £71,521 in London and £74,795 in Edinburgh.

8. Gender diversity is a concern

The female to male ratio in the tech teams is highly skewed presently with male to female ratio in contractor markets being 91:09 whereas for permanent 90:10.  2016 saw criticisms made that not enough diversity is present in many contemporary working environments. 68% of the businesses asked have diversity goals as part of their recruitment strategy.
